New Song based on Psalm 24: You Are the One

This lent at Oikos Church, we are going through the Psalms. It’s been our practice as leaders to follow the Moravian Daily Text together daily as we meet together at the Central Target Starbucks near downtown Houston. We gather every Monday – Thursday morning at 8:15a to hear from the Lord and share individually what the Lord is saying to us. It’s been a wonderful daily rhythm as God’s household together. It reminds me much of Acts 2.

Since we are all reading through the psalms together, I thought it would be a good discipline to write a psalm of my own each week throughout this season. Monday’s psalm was Psalm 24 that was written by King David. Here’s the text:

Psalm 24 (NLT)

A psalm of David.

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it.
The world and all its people belong to him.
For he laid the earth’s foundation on the seas
and built it on the ocean depths.

Who may climb the mountain of the Lord?
Who may stand in his holy place?
Only those whose hands and hearts are pure,
    who do not worship idols
    and never tell lies.
They will receive the Lord’s blessing
and have a right relationship with God their savior.
Such people may seek you
and worship in your presence, O God of Jacob. Interlude

Open up, ancient gates!
    Open up, ancient doors,
and let the King of glory enter.
Who is the King of glory?
    The Lord, strong and mighty;
    the Lord, invincible in battle.
Open up, ancient gates!
    Open up, ancient doors,
and let the King of glory enter.
10 Who is the King of glory?
    The Lord of Heaven’s Armies—
he is the King of glory. Interlude

As I was writing this song, I was reminded that everything is the Lord’s. Everything. It’s not just the trees, rocks, mountains, and seas that are His, but everything. My body, my clothes, my words, my prayers, my children, my tears… all of it. Everything. He is King of everything and he is glorious.

I did find myself stuck a number of times and had the help of my wonderful wife Ashley. What I thought would be a pre chorus, she suggested was the chorus, she helped me with a few words that rhymed better, and validated that the bridge was good. She felt this song needed to stay simple and singable. So here is my song currently entitled “You Are the One”.

“You Are the One” by Jason & Ashley Phelps

V1: Everything I have, everywhere I stand is Yours / Everyone who breathes, anything I see is Yours

CHORUS: ‘Cause You are the One who speaks / And You are the One who breathes in me

V2: Every thought I have, every tear that’s shed is Yours / Every word I say, anytime I pray is Yours

BRIDGE: Creator King, to You my heart will sing / Creator King, to You my heart will sing of Your glory

I would love to hear your thoughts and I hope that this song is a blessing to you. We will be debuting it in worship this Sunday at Oikos.
